Hamam – The History

A Turkish bath or hamam (Turkish: hamam, Arabic: ḥammām‎) is the Turkish variant of the Roman bath, steam bath, sauna, or Russian banya, distinguished by a focus on water, as distinct from ambient steam.

In Western Europe, the "Turkish bath" as a method of cleansing and relaxation became popular during the Victorian era. The process involved in taking a Turkish bath is similar to that of a sauna, but is more closely related to ancient Greek and ancient Roman bathing practices.

David Urquhart, diplomat and sometime Member of Parliament for Stafford, who for political and personal reasons wished to popularize Turkish culture, introduced the Turkish baths to Britain. In 1850 he wrote the book “The Pillars of Hercules”. In 1856 Richard Barter read Urquhart's book and worked with him to construct a bath. They opened the first modern Turkish bath near Blarney (Cork, Ireland)

During the following 150 years, over 600 Turkish baths opened in Britain, including those built by municipal authorities as part of swimming pool complexes, taking advantage of the fact that water-heating boilers were already on site.

Hamam – The Feeling

Hamam, a mysterious and mystical-sounding word – but what exactly is this traditional bathing ceremony from Turkey with an emphasis on wellness factor?

Dive in, submerge and feel the relaxation of body and soul. Discover the fascinating bathing ceremony of the hamam and the wellness effect.

In the Turkish tradition – no matter of young or old, modern or conservative - it is still common to perform the special hamam bathing ceremony once a week and before special feast days. Traditionally, the public hamam is not only used to clean the body, but serves also as meeting place, because here can be chatted and gossiped in a relaxed atmosphere.

The entire procedure is usually performed and accompanied by a "Tellak" the master of the Hamam rituals. For first cleaning a bath or a shower is recommended. Then follows the steam room, with a comfortable temperature of 45 ° C making the muscles relax and the skin pores open and providing so ideal conditions for the subsequent peeling. After about 10 to 15 minutes allow lukewarm water to flow over the body and soap yourself. Now you will be ready to lie down on the warm marble centre stone, the "Göbek taşı". The "Tellak" will now wash your body with a special washing glove using professional massage techniques. This special treatment is called "Kese". Dander and deeper deposits will be removed, the blood circulation will be increased and the skin will be rosy and fresh. Skin like silk – that’s the result of the Hamam!

How do I make a reservation?

You may make your reservation directly at the Wellness Reception Desk.

What time should I be there?

Please try to be at the Wellness area at least 5 - 10 minutes prior to the start of your appointment. That will allow you time to check in at the desk, change into your robe and complete a Health Questionnaire. Please take in account that arriving late will limit the time for your wellness treatment.

What should I wear?

During your service, you will be professionally draped at all times. Some guests prefer to leave their undergarments on or to wear a bathing suit during massage services. Please feel free to do what feels most comfortable to you.

What should I wear into the sauna or Turkish bath?

Some guests wear their robes or wrap up in towels or the traditional Peştamel, the flat woven Turkish Hamam towel. Also a bathing suit would be fine.

If I am pregnant, what services can I receive?

Expectant guests may enjoy facial services. All other treatments should be checked with your doctor before booking. Wraps, hot stone services or deep tissue work should not be performed on expectant guests.

What about Kids?

Sorry, but the Wellness area is an adult area, we respectfully request not to bring children with you to this area.
